Although the government has announced the expansion of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, state airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II has not disseminated the news to residents who could face relocation to make way for the expansion of the airport’s terminals and construction of a third runway
Asiah Nasution, 45, a resident of neighborhood unit (RT) 04 in community unit (RW) 04 in Selapajang subdistrict, Neglasari district, Tangerang city, was clueless about the plan.
“We’ve received no notification from the airport management about the eviction,” said the widow of five children recently.
Asiah and other residents, who came from Cirebon, Kuningan and Indramayu in West Java, built a number of shanties on vacant land after securing permission from the local neighborhood unit head.
Asiah earns a living by selling snacks and beverages in the office of the Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI), while her neighbors cultivate the vacant lot to plant vegetables.
She said they were aware that the land was the property of AP II, but they still expected compensation if they were asked to leave the area.
“I only have one wish. If we are evicted, I wonder if we can get compensation that we can use to rent a house. I spent Rp 5 million [US$437] to build this shack,” Asiah said.
Samasudin, 52, a resident of Bojong Renged village in Teluknaga district, Tangerang regency, was also clueless about the expansion.
“I haven’t heard about it until today. I’ve just finished renovating my house. Had I known I would be evicted, I would have used the money for other purposes,” he said.
AP II corporate secretary Daryanto was not available to give information on the number of families who would be affected by the construction of the third runway, which covered three districts — Neglasari in Tangerang city, Teluknaga and Kosambi in Tangerang regency.
Meanwhile, head of communications at the company, Achmad Syahrir, said his company has not disseminated the plan to expand the airport to nearby residents.
“We’ve just conducted a study, which told us that we need 830 hectares of land for our projects, which form part of the grand design of the airport,” he said over the phone.
In the middle of April, the government committed to backing the land clearing to pave the way for the airport’s expansion, which includes the construction of the third runway to add to the existing two runways.
The operator needs Rp 4 trillion just to clear the land for the 3,660-meter by 60-meter runway, which will be built in 2016.
The third runway is deemed crucial as AP II data shows that the annual number of passengers at Soekarno-Hatta was 60.13 million last year, or nearly thrice its annual capacity of 22 million passengers.
With the new runway, the airport is expected to accommodate 87 to 100 million passengers per year.
The airport’s operator earmarked Rp 26.2 trillion to develop Soekarno-Hatta between 2010
and 2016, with Rp 11.1 trillion allocated for this year. It also aims to complete the expansion of the third terminal, to accommodate 25 million passengers annually, next year.
The operator plans to expand the first terminal at Soekarno-Hatta to 204,445 square meters by 2017 from the current 144,635 square meters to accommodate 18 million passengers annually.

COMMENTS :
In my opinion , I agree if the airport was also expanded to promote and boast airports in Indonesia . Because in an increasingly modern era and the advanced countries neighboring the airport already has a great many wide and nice and sophisticated systems in terms of safety , cleanliness , comfort of passengers . However it must be noted also scheduled flight departure because many aircraft are late in making a disappointing departure airport passengers . Do not just be an expanded airport but the airport management system should be improved. And for the residents who will be relocated , in fact they should be aware if they know the land they occupy the land that the government is aware of and they should not build there . This also has happened , and they are also human beings to be aware of his rights . For the residents around the airport should be provided enough land for them to live well , or if it is insufficient funding should be replaced with a decent amount of money for them . Problems or not enough for them , it is the opinion of each resident , but they also need to know that the land they occupy is not right to them so there must be cooperation between the airport and nearby residents . In addition to the compensation to be paid the airport , residents can also make a living at the airport to be expanded . If the airport is expanded already finished , the airport can also empower citizens around the airport area so that their livelihood and income should remain irreplaceable . With notes , citizens livelihoods around the airport must comply with rules and regulations that exist at the airport so the airport is safe and orderly . Residents can also enjoy the revenue generated in the airport area . Because of the expanded airport is also central to the economy of local people .
